From Hotel to Restaurant
A Taste of Time
For more than a century, our building has been a vibrant part of the community. Generations of visitors have passed through its doors, making it a lasting part of the area’s history and heritage.
The Schulenburg-Laut building first opened its doors in 1891. The east half was home to The Schulenburg Store, a popular stationery and music shop, while the west half housed The Central, a lively saloon and restaurant that quickly became a gathering place for the community.
As the town continued to grow, so did the property. In 1896, a neighboring building was constructed just to the west and opened as The Hotel Central, welcoming travelers and visitors to the area.
Over the decades, these historic buildings evolved alongside the community they served housing a variety of businesses and services, including the local post office, newspaper offices, barber shops, restaurants, and saloons. Each chapter added to the rich character of the property, creating a legacy of hospitality and connection that continues to this day.
A Historic Space
Located in the Heart of New Bremen
Today, The Bicycle Museum of America occupies the east half of the historic Schulenburg-Laut building, while 17 West occupies the west half, as well as the entirety of the former hotel to the west. The two buildings have been thoughtfully connected to create an inviting space where timeless craftsmanship meets modern hospitality.
These side-by-side buildings from the 1890s remain an important part of the town's historic streetscape, valued for their architectural character and longstanding role in supporting the needs of the community.
Today, 17 West continues that tradition by providing a welcoming atmosphere where travelers and locals alike can gather, share a meal, celebrate meaningful moments, and enjoy exceptional food and service in a setting rich with history.

His commitment to exceptional food and memorable guest experiences has helped define the restaurant's reputation for outstanding cuisine and hospitality. In recognition of his talent and contributions to the industry, Chef Joel was honored as Ohio's Chef of the Year in 2026 by the Ohio Restaurant & Hospitality Alliance, a distinction awarded to leaders who exemplify excellence in the state's restaurant and hospitality community.
